FDA and Dangerous Nail Polish - Dangers

Buffers > Edges Rough to Smooth and Shine

Before and After

I guess I must have heard something about the dangers of fingernail polish several years ago when I stopped using polish of any kind. I have loads of fake fingernails, beautiful ones; but my daughter-in-law who passed away a few years ago told me how they mess up your real nails and she used them all the time so I have not yet used those either.

Luckily I was just walking down the mall one evening and this guy wanted to show me his product for sale and well you know you just walk on but before I could he is holding my hand and gone to work on one of my fingernails! He was insistent and so I just stood there until he was finished and wow was I impressed. That one fingernail was so pink, (My skin showing through) silky and so shiny. I was sold. That is what I have used ever since. Just a few months ago my son showed up with one telling me all about it but I let him know I already knew. He uses one too now! You know the roughness you get across your nails at times, it takes all that off. I have a white stick for using under the nail and I suppose it would show off the pink nail but for whatever reason my nails are already very white underneath, and I am sure they weren’t years ago when I did use the stick, but of course washing your hands a lot would wash it out anyway I imagine and all I do is wash my hands! (And use sanitizer, I don’t care what new warning the FDA has to say about that!) No one can make up their minds about anything.

I feel like Lewis Black sometimes, saying you can’t eat eggs, now you can, oops no you can't, well you can if you eat the white with the yellow….on and on about different things they change their mind back and forth and he said…I’m Hungry…I just want to eat breakfast!

The average, usual nail polishes sold at most drugstores and nail salons have an out-and-out wild concoction of chemicals, along with toluene, being linked to many health problems from headaches and eye, ear, nose and throat irritation to nervous system disorders and damage to the liver and kidneys! Yet another familiar but toxic ingredient usually used in nail polish is a chemical plasticizer known as dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit research group that tries to educate buyers about the health risks of cosmetics, studies has linked DBP to undersized genitals and other reproductive system problems in newborn boys. Strange, isn’t it? My gift of suspicion kicking in I guess.

DBP is banned from cosmetics in the European Union but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has taken no action, (big surprise there) even though a new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found DBP and other toxic phthalates in the bloodstreams of every person they tested! The FDA in the United States appears to want things to happen to people if you ask me. As the saying in my family always went, I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw a stick! If they want to allow it the least they could do is put warning on the bottles! Why would they knowingly allow this? Along with that 5% of women tested of childbearing age had up to 45 times more of the chemicals in their bodies than researchers had even thought to discover there!

The occurrence of DBP in young women is suspected to be from long use of nail polish. Pregnant women should avoid all exposure to DBP or if even considering becoming pregnant. The good news is there are safer nail polishes available at natural health and beauty supply stores and from online companies. They rely on naturally occurring minerals and plant extracts to color nails without the need for toxic ingredients.

Apparently though major nail polish manufacturers are also now getting in on the act. I think that would be a good idea if they don’t want sued. Organizations such as EWG and the Breast Cancer Fund, Avon, Estee Lauder, Revlon and L’Oreal said for sure that they would begin removing DBP from products. Sally Hansen said it is making new formulas of its products to remove DBP and toluene as well as formaldehyde, which is also known to cause cancer and reproductive problems.

Toxic chemicals are not the only health fear linked with nail salons, where nail fungus and bacteria can lie in wait on the underside of any emery board. I absolutely do not trust these places to use new emery boards etc. on me, they charge a fortune in my opinion and what is the cost of a new emery board, and especially wholesale? Please! And do they disinfect all tools and equipment between customers. I don’t even trust people to use new needles when taking my blood and if I am conscious I make them let me see it being taken out of a new package! If you can’t trust the FDA, who can you trust? Gee, just look at all the things nail polish could be causing you and your doctor would sure never have a clue! You could die maybe and it would simple say after a long illness, not because no one who is suppose to does their job!

I think it is great though just using the buffer and I usually do it on car trips, when I am not the driver of course! It doesn’t have to even take even any of my important times keeping them looking great! One thing about them though I have notice is if you file the nail very much you cannot have really long nails because it makes them thin but I have over ¼ inch white tips and I like it just like that and they feel very strong.

So try it, you might like it and I am not sure I want to go back to polishing ever, this suits me fine and I use good lotions to keep my hands looking soft and young.

Be sure not to share this with anyone being just as important as a tooth brush or mascara to feel safe to not pick up germs or possible fungus from someone else!

Make sure your hands are clean also before using.

Thanks for the info Polly. I never polish my fingernails, but do polish my toes during the summer months. They get in really bad shape by the time fall arrives. They peal and crack and are just a mess.

I use that buffer on my toenails too, you can thin down the thickness of them, I did on Mom hers where so thick and I would make them shiny smooth, but it took me several days, she would only keep still for me so long! lol I will never use any more polish even if they claim it is safe after learning more danger than even suspected and FDA not caring. That is their job, but who does their job anymore? Sorry for fussing, thanks for stopping by!

I bought something like this a while back from a couple of Jewish ladies selling Dead Sea salt products. They have kiosks in different places around the world I guess. But it's as you describe. I bought my daughter some of that. Great hub!

I know Sa'ge, it's stupid of me anyway since I am not even writing for pay. I should put a letter on here I got from a college professor. All year long I lead in all his classes and the last grade I got was below class average and still an A and I had things to say he just didn't understand, well I just wanted him to tell me how I went from smartest to dumbest and he didn't get it! Actually what he did was give me a low score because he wasn't giving us materials soon enough for assignments and I told on him, but I didn't bring that up, what was the use? He thought I was weird, I knew he was! lol But thanks, I will try ignore it.

Pollyannalana Hub Author 20 months ago

Thanks Micky, it really is and although I only heard a little years ago it got me to thinking wow who knows what that could do to you and now I do know and the FDA apparently is glad of it hurting people, why else would they ignore it! If I wasn't a lady I'd put fudge all over these hubs sometimes I get so mad!lol

I got oil and lotion and a bag of goodies with it and of course I don't let anyone else use it so no worries there, I hope young girls remember to not share, maybe i should mention that, thanks for giving me the thought. Thanks for coming by and reading!

It seems like your FDA is on more than one payroll.

Pollyannalana profile image

Yea tell me, all of them are on more than one payroll and it is called Lobbyists, which in my book is out and out crooks. They would sell their soul if the price was right, I wouldn't take any bets they haven't already.

Polly, i had the same thing happen to me. I was walking in the mall and was approached by a lady selling the buffer kit. I was amazed how beautiful she made my nails look, like you said, pink.I do polish my toe nails in the summer. Great hub.

Thanks always, this was a young guy that grabbed my hand and there we were, head to head, but he got me sold. I will never use anymore polish anywhere. I did see some little stick on glitters today I though might be nice for Christmas or special date. Thanks for reading.

So true Pollyannalana. I also wrote a hub about nail polish and these same dangers you mention. It is amazing how many toxic products are allowed on the shelves. Many of these same companies claim to now take out the toxins - but why should we believe them. I like the idea of buffing. Sounds good.

Rated up and thanks for this reminder. We need it! (Glad you don't buff and drive!)

Pollyannalana profile image

Pollyannalana Hub Author 20 months ago

Thank you! and my husband is glad for the buffing so I don't back seat drive! If the FDA doesn't do something like NOW I hope someone sues the H-e double L out of em! Or whoever they can. I guess FDA is another word for god here in America. They certainly do not do their job!

You are welcome I am very glad I heard a little something years ago and gave it up, and you know the FDA has known much more, I bet it has been close to ten years if not. Thanks for reading.

Thanks. I never have gotten along very well with nail polish. It makes my fingernails flake off in little pieces.

Pollyannalana profile image

Yeah it's a real job Silver Poet and then breathing the remover for all the time it takes to get it off, I am perfectly satisfied without it.

Sorry BK I certainly did not know you had one too, in fact I always type a search in here before I start a subject and I found none.

For a job once we had to wear clear coat plastic - like nail polish on our full hands and then pit gloves on over the clear coat we were cleaning up some bad a$$ stuff...so I bet some other things were even worse great informative hub here ...I'd tell my wife but I have only seen her pit on clear coat nail polish three times in 13 yrs

I used it all through high school and some years after but what I can't get over is our FDA knowing and not caring, almost wanting problems just like they know some pharmaceutical companies will add something bad to a needed medicine so people will need another of their medicines to cure that!

All I can say is hell is heating up!

I am completely allergic to fingernail polish. I think it is the formaldehyde in it. I have completely stopped painting my finger nails. Still do the toes now and then.

That buffer is great for toes too, makes them look pink, easier if you can get some help, lol Thanks for stopping by!

The dangerous things they sell us are unfortunately nearly everything we buy! I found that out since developing sensitivities to almost everything man made. And just because I can sense the toxins and others can't doesn't mean they're not putting a strain on their immune systems, which can effect them long term.

I'm glad you're bringing this to people's attention with this example.

Pollyannalana profile image

Pollyannalana Hub Author 9 months ago

Thank you and I too have problem with so many things. Even years ago when Ivory soap was suppose to be so gentile, it would cause my face to get a rash and burn and even today I use either caress or Noxema on my face. Olay that is suppose to be so great breaks me out like the Ivory use to!

With these buffers I keep my fingernails at a more reasonable length and they are easier to keep all the same length.

Glad you liked it!

Voted up for this useful hub! I think the FDA are a very corrupt organisation so this does not surprise me!

Pollyannalana profile image

Pollyannalana Hub Author 9 months ago

No it does not surprise me either like making it so hard for our farmers to be able to sell to us for regulations but then we can have Mexico's veggies with feces and China's lead, no rules there! Very much we have no idea about either I am sure. Thanks for the vote!

Btw I used to be in Scientology many years back and I remember L Ron Hubbard said that FDA stood for "Fools and Drug Addicts."

Well I very well could agree but really the older I get I think more we are the fools. When are we ever going to unite and say things are going to change!

I'm really not into finger nails much or such products. In my house, soap is soap - shampoo, body wash etc is all the same to me lol, but now something on the FDA, that raises an eyebrow. And you're right, I don't think they know anymore than the man on the moon. They are big fat waste of money - I might give them 10% creditability, but that's about it. Great hub Polly. And nice to see you, I've been gone awhile. - Harlan

Thank you, I am a little like that on the soaps, I love the fruity or coconut shampoos for hand soaps and body wash. I don't trust anyone anymore and I know something is up to destroy the US. I guess fingernail polish is a small thing compared to that. Thanks for the visit Harlan.

Great Hub Polly!

I love nail buffers and gave up polish ages ago as they ruin your nails and I'm very wary of chemicals. I don't trust authorities to say something is safe as normally they say that whether it is or not for the sake of a few quid.

I'm currently recovering from long term Heavy Metal Poisoning partly linked to amalgam fillings which are claimed safe in all but 2 countries (Sweden and Denmark)

Best thing to do is keep it simple and keep it natural whether cosmetics, toiletries, home cleaning or food imo.

Pollyannalana Hub Author 5 months ago

I second that and also medicines when you can and most can if they start young enough. I am adding natural though and plan to back out of as many medicines as I can and have succeeded with the pain killers to a large extent. I trust no governments either, especially in America. Other countries are at least up front instead of stabbing in the back and poisoning the children, or letting others!

Thank you Karen for reading and commenting!

My pleasure Polly!

Oh yeah totally medicines too...I recently had an infection after a complicated tooth extraction and took raw garlic. It cleared up in two days and helped my digestion too, whereas antibiotics would've taken a week at least and hurt my stomach.

It's just the same here in the UK tbh. The government and all those in their pockets are just concerned with money not people, very sad really :(

Awesome hub! The only "safe" nail polish I have personally used is Zoya. I've tried two different colors and they are beautiful and seem to stay on longer than the average nail polish.

They advertise this: "Zoya Nail Polish is a nail polish free of toluene, formaldehyde, DBP (phthalates) and camphor."

Thanks for this very informative hub!

Sooner28, we really should be able to depend on our governments to keep us safe, but many have to die before they do anything and sometimes i wonder if they do then. Trade now allowing so much in to hurt children makes me so angry at them, they should shut down all trade with countries that repeatedly break safety rules! Thanks for commenting!
