Hunger in America Growing

13.9 million individuals are currently unemployed, that the government will admit to and though current claimants can claim for more than 26 weeks for at least a while, periods of payment have been lowered drastically. Why is our government not jumping in doing something PDQ?
Hunger is a reality in the United States, it is in every state, every county and every town. One in five don't know where their next meal is coming from. I have always known we had a problem but now it is reaching more than the homeless. It is into the homes. It is people working but not making enough money. It is families who once had two working and now only one. It is single parents stretched to the limit. It is an emergency such as car trouble or high utilities and now there is barely any food in the fridge.
Millions of children do eat a meal at school so that will keep them from starving to death if they are one of the lucky ones, but it won't keep them from going to bed hungry. It won't give them something to eat over the weekend and on holidays. The cost of food is almost doubling and no wages are going up. There are some food banks to help some when they have no choice but to go begging. Sometimes; in some places. Does anyone in DC care? Are they missing any meals? {Are they drinking water from the faucet?} Are their children getting three meals a day? Are they worried about tomorrow or next week or a weekend their children can't even have one meal? How many people could eat for one of their many, many plane trips?
They can give millions and billions to the rich and wealthy and bail out big business and countries all around the world but our government never addresses our homeless or hungry, do they? No. Our states that are not allowed their own laws now can just worry about their own hungry. Well though; unless they have changed it; our government was starting to charge for a license to feed hungry at about $200 didn't I hear down Texas way? Greed. Our government. We are shamed. There is no excuse for one American to go hungry. It is just not right! All while our tax dollars are keeping the bellies of illegals full. The ones with more rights than an American. Who have to answer to no one and anyone is punished who try to do anything about it.
Our government doesn't want it called the hungry anymore, no, we will now call it food security or insecurity. That makes it sound much better on them. While that number keeps going up of ones starving we can just give it a better sounding label.
Already all the lotteries and gambling in the states which I believe most say is for education or a large portion seems to not be helping there since teachers are out trying to round up enough materials for their children before the school year. In fact it has been reported by the New York Times that really only 1 to 5 percent of the proceeds of gambling is actually reaching our school children. Like everything else no one has to answer, since they apparently are all up to something. So then why don't we use a little of that gambling money and feed the hungry, build some shelters, clean up our cities of the homeless instead of dumping them in the country where there are no trash cans to search through or buildings to block the cold.
How about using it to create some jobs in America; so no one has to smell up the air and make us look the other way? It could be us pretty soon. How secure are you?
Gas prices are on the rise again, maybe as high as $5 a gallon in May, 2012. Why? What has happened now to make it go up? Do they think we are fools to not see it lowered every holiday to make us get out and spend more money and then...right back up. How will that affect you? Will food prices go even higher? Of course they will. They have to if gas is up. Is anyone paying attention to what is happening to this country? Doesn't it look as if our own government is trying to destroy America and add more to unemployment and food bank lines? Food banks the government want to tax or control. People the government wants to control. Are any of them really for us? Do any of them see what America has become? Is this what they want? Where are we headed?
I vote we come up with a new name for politicians, they would like that wouldn't they? Public Servants; secure and insecure. Do we have a secure one to choose from?

I had no idea hunger was so rampant in America! The price of food keeps rising as well. Great Hub I hope many people read this.
I took some things into a local food bank recently and the grateful woman who received my donation said their demand was way up.
This is a very touching subject Polly. Here in Jamaica it's the same thing. Every thing is so expensive and salaries are increasing any. There are little or no jobs to be had.

Cardisa we have all just sat too long and let idiot leaders do this to us and i fear it is too late for a way out. I am so thankful I am not a young person now looking for work, especially new ones starting families! Can you imagine?
You think as if the government was an independent entity, thinking independently! Don't you see that behind it are private interests, why would they worry about you, us? Most of the people live in a comfortable bubble thinking that it will NEVER reach their country, their door!
More and more people are getting affected by this selfish policy in our hub community!
Do we really think that the American government is different from the Somalian one when it comes to topple the hunger problem?

Very interesting article Polly. This is what we get for trusting our fate to the politicos and the corporations. Few people have access to the soil to grow food anymore. The stock market elites hold sway over the cost of living. Bankers pass down orders to elected governments. Meanwhile, Monsanto are cracking on with their 'terminator' seed science.
Keep putting it out there Polly before/until they close down the web for truth.
Maxoaxom, there are many corrupt governments but I am only talking about mine right now and I will only take the blame insofar as I have not stepped out alone although I have been speaking out for quite awhile now. I encourage people to do something and there are smarter ones than me out there that probably know how. Yes the ones who are comfortable are probably not concerned, they don't realize bottom line it will reach them too, but it will, their freedoms anyway and all they buy. For show our government will feed other countries but not her own, that is my beef; besides being a much larger problem than they admit to. Thanks for reading!
Yes that is what they are working on now amillar, we all know and will we allow it? We had better not. Things are not going to turn around on their own, we are going to have to fight for it. It is time to clean house!

Charging $200 for a license to feed the hungry! Thats not right. And that's something about the lottery or idiot tax as its often called. We should all make an extra effort to give food where we know its going to help. Good rant Polly.
Thank you Alastar and I recommend people take food directly to these food shelters when possible. Maybe I am one big skeptic but it seems strange to me all these stores collect food and pantries are running short, but maybe that is a reflection of having more hungry collecting food. I always pay attention to elderly neighbors too; to know someone is visiting them so I know someone is there to check on them to make sure they eat.
Polly - A lot of what you described is by design. Dependency on the federal government has grown by 23% the last two years. I'd rather not become a slave to our government and its policies myself.

Well I guess I see where you are coming from Frog Prince but that is like saying we are not the government and that I see as the problem. I am not asking the government to feed these hungry people as if they are someone who is lazy and deserves to starve to death; I am saying if my money is going somewhere I want it to go to needy Americans, not politicians and illegal immigrants! The reason there is a dependency is because people are losing their jobs, from all the ones sent overseas and then illegals taking all they can of the ones there is! Teens really are hurting for jobs that could be helping parent out because of illegals, and I don't know when Americans are going to stop rolling their eyes and see we have been overtaken!
Isn't it amazing we have politicians like Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich who say billionaires need tax cuts, but spending on social programs are off limits? Right now, the conservative party is living in bizzaro world.
Thank you Sooner for your response. I certainly know the rich are winning out anyway we turn that is so true and no one is doing anything, as we can all see. The politicians are filthy rich and I mean that in every way so apparently power is their only goal with no thought to holding this country together. Only a miracle would pull us out now and I don't think they any qualify for that job.

Great Hub on a topic that many Americans don't want to acknowledge. I am incensed over the millions and billions of dollars our government sends overseas to fund humanitarian causes, when we have a laundry list of social problems here that need to be addressed. I believe we should use channel financial resources to take care of our own before we go out and try to save the world. That also goes for the celebrities with their world-cause du jour. Thanks for letting me rant! :)
Thank you for bringing up the celebrities, I so agree, lindacee. Apparently they do it for show. Ones who give millions while all around them need help and food and warmth. I think they will say why to someone.
I think what has happened in these last three years is an orchestrated effort by the Progressive (read Marxist, Atheist) people in America to get half of our citizens dependent on the government.
Why half? It takes half to get reelected and perhaps get power forever like Chavez in Venezuela.
Why do they want you dependent on the government? Because if the government is providing your food, shelter, clothes, electricity, transportation, education, entertainment, and your health care; you are locked in voting for the party that promises to keep giving you all that free stuff. You are a loyal supporter for life.
As Shaw said: "If you rob Peter to pay Paul; you can always count on the support of Paul."
It is easy to start giving away other people's money—it is hard to stop the giveaways once people get used to them.
I just read yesterday that the Progressives have finally done it! For the first time in American history, half of all Americans pay no taxes and half get some kind of personal assistance from the federal government.
20 percent of our population is entirely dependent on the government to keep on living; and for the first time in American history, those on the dole make more money than the average working person!
The average working person makes $55,000 a year but after taxes takes home about $32,000. A person on the dole now gets total government benefits of $33,000 for doing nothing. So why work?
If you think it is bad now, wait til the government gets its hands of the complete control of pharmaceuticals. You know those "happy pills" one out five Americans are addicted to right now? The day will come when you have to vote for the "correct" political party to get your prescription. And people will do anything to not have to go through withdrawal from psychotropic drugs.
Well James I better really get busy on those natural cures! I do bring out the new hungry people in this hub but I really am still highly concerned about the ones the government just want to kill off and they are so out of it I doubt they vote! Homeless people are no benefit to the government and as I want to keep reminding everyone, "we the people" need to be making the decisions. We need to be heard, like now! Knowing that is probably why they are going to jump in and control the internet. How can we stop them, we let them get by with everything else? It is time to be heard!
Great Hub Polly and one which is an eye opener of what is to come. I fear for the children as they are the most vulnerable. They are the future for us all and when they can no longer be cared for it is so sad.

So true, the price increases and hunger pains are reaching peoples homes and affecting more and more people.Everything is based around the love of money. They will be using the hunger problem to start controlling the people in the future-it will be do as the government says or we won't feed you, or anything else. The government has even had farmers stop farming in some area, killed whole chicken coops by spraying them with chemicals, dumped are grains in the ocean-just so they could hike the prices up.Hybrid and Genetically Engineered Foods- so we can't get any seeds,and it is effecting the birds,bees and the health risks to us humans are unknown-but sickness are rising and many point to the the Genetically Engineered Foods.Perry Stone has exposed this well (lots of details) and once I find it on youtube I will come back and give you a link,but I have it on cd.
